I Flipped A Digital Asset And I Liked It

“Flipping a digital asset” is a super fancy way of saying that I recently sold a Facebook page. It was not a glamorous process, but it was a lot of fun. A little bit of background: it was 2010 and my friends and I decided to make a Facebook fan page for diner that we all loved. Everyone in the area started liking the page and while it was fun for a little while, we moved on to the next thing. Back then, Facebook was not the driver of business traffic and information like it is today. At the time we made the page the diner didn’t even have a Facebook page of its own. How crazy is that!

Sadly, the diner experienced poor management and went out of business but people started using the page to reminisce on the good times they once had. A few years went by and one day, Facebook decided to make our page the official page of the now closed diner.

Fast forward a few more years to this summer and we received a message in the page’s inbox. It was the new owner of the diner asking for control over the page. By this time the page had amassed ~2,000 followers who are still very engaged. We negotiated with the new management and landed on selling the page for $500.

Obviously that is not a life-changing amount of money, but replicating that process of creating a digital asset, growing a following and selling for a profit can be a great side hustle for anybody. All you have to do is be authentic to provide value and the followers will, well, follow.
